Evergy to Issue Nuclear Power-Based Zero Emission Credits through Xpansiv’s North American Renewables Registry

Registry-issued credits will provide serialized, auditable proof of emission-free electricity supporting customer programs and reporting
KANSAS CITY, Mo. and NEW YORK — August 12, 2026 — Evergy, an electric utility serving about 1.7 million customers in Kansas and Missouri, and Xpansiv, the leading infrastructure provider for the global energy transition markets, today announced Evergy’s plans to issue nuclear power-based Zero Emission Credits (ZECs) through Xpansiv’s North American Renewables Registry (NAR), expanding access to verified, trackable instruments tied to emission-free electricity generation.
ZECs mirror the structure of renewable energy certificates (RECs), with each certificate representing one megawatt-hour (1 MWh) of emission-free electricity generated for the grid and tracked from issuance through retirement.
Evergy expects to source the initial ZEC issuance from Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station near Burlington, Kansas, which generates approximately 1,200 megawatts of emissions-free, reliable electricity, enough to power more than 800,000 homes.
“Issuing nuclear power-based ZECs through NAR gives customers an additional, credible pathway to document progress toward sustainability goals with transparent, serialized certificates,” said Chuck Caisley, Chief Customer Officer, Evergy. “ZECs will complement Evergy’s broader set of customer renewable and other clean energy options, expanding the tools customers can use to support sustainability goals. Proceeds from nuclear-based zero emission credits will be credited back through our retail rates, benefiting all our customers.”
NAR is a leading renewable energy certificate (REC) registry across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico with approximately 100 GW of renewable energy capacity. It is part of the broader Xpansiv platform and registry network, with a leading position in electricity that covers approximately 28% of global REC issuance, 7% of global renewable electricity generation, and 4% of total global electricity generation.
“Verified, registry-issued ZECs are increasingly central to corporate decarbonization programs and to disclosure and reporting requirements,” said Katherine Doyle, Senior Vice President, Xpansiv. “NAR provides the infrastructure to issue and manage nuclear-based certificates with full lifecycle traceability from issuance to retirement.”
Demand for emission-free electricity attributes is growing as organizations pursue decarbonization strategies and manage rising electricity needs from data centers, electrification, and other load growth drivers. Global renewable electricity capacity is projected to double by 2030, according to the International Energy Agency, with an additional 4,600 GW coming online, equal to the combined installed power capacity of China, the European Union, and Japan.
NAR provides a trusted platform for issuing, tracking, and managing clean energy certificates across North America, including secure documentation to support decarbonization and sustainability goals with confidence. Its registry infrastructure is built with enterprise-grade controls and a SOC 2 Type II attestation covering the security of the platform, designed to ensure data integrity and operational reliability.
