C-Capsule
C-Capsule is a carbon credit standard and registry for durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Unlike emission avoidance or reduction programs, C-Capsule only certifies carbon that has been durably removed from the atmospheric cycle. In partnership with Absolute Climate as the methodology developer, we are helping scale the supply of high quality, lasting CDR.

The Future of Durable Carbon Removal
Why C-Capsule
C-Capsule offers a proven, high-integrity solution for durable carbon removal, in partnership with Absolute Climate as the methodology developer.
Efficient and Reliable
C-Capsule provides an easy to implement solution that addresses the “burden of proof” challenge encountered in reduction/avoidance carbon credit markets. C-Capsule reduces the cost and increases the credibility of carbon action by supporting durable CDR solutions.
Science- and Impact-Based
C-Capsule allows an evidence-based choice for CDR activities from a preferred technology or process. CRUs (Carbon Removal Units) are uniquely attributable to verified facts relating to the durable sequestration of atmospheric carbon.
Universal methodologies can be problematic when evidencing complex or unique processes. We set clear eligibility criteria for technology developers to produce CRUs, providing opportunities to participate in the market through use of robust methodologies for every solution.
Durable Sequestration
Developers must evidence both the capture and sequestration of CO2. C-Capsule assures buyers of the durability of carbon sequestered over a 100-year time horizon.
Third Party Verified
CRUs are independently verified at the point of issuance based on measured CDR activity. Each facility is third party audited by a Validation and Verification Body (VVB) prior to issuance to ensure adherence with the relevant methodology.
Supporting Frameworks and Fair Treatment
C-Capsule is designed to support claim standards and frameworks such as the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM), Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the Voluntary Carbon Market Initiative (VCMI), CDP, and others to help organizations realize their corporate sustainability goals.
The C-Capsule service is also provided under a universal tariff to ensure non-discrimination and a “level playing field” in the marketplace. Our service providers are not permitted to participate in the C-Capsule market or have any direct interest in the price of CRUs.

Who Can Benefit from C-Capsule
Technology Developers
Owners of CDR facilities can produce a CRU for every net tonne of CO2 captured and durably sequestered. Processes able to evidence independently verified CDR data are eligible for CRUs. Facilities must conform to a methodology aligned with the C-Capsule Methodology Guidelines and approved by the International Tracking Standard Foundation (I-TRACK Foundation). CRUs can be sold as soon as they are issued, providing a rapid cash return on CDR activities.
Companies with Sustainability Goals
C-Capsule provides a reliable mechanism for companies to neutralize their carbon footprint in pursuit of sustainability goals. Organizations can either engage directly with facility operators or use market intermediaries to manage their portfolio.
Market Intermediaries
We recognize the key role played by market intermediaries in providing sustainability reporting and consulting services to their clients. CRUs carry information about every net tonne of CO2 removed, allowing intermediaries to deliver bespoke portfolio management services to their clients. As account holders, market intermediaries can manage client accounts securely and confidentially.
Governments
C-Capsule encourages governments to adopt common global standards for reporting. Recognizing that governments are sovereign, C-Capsule services are designed to enable government authorities to seamlessly undertake any role within the service on a country-by-country basis, fully compliant with the International Attribute Tracking Standard.
Insurers and Risk Managers
Insurers will play a critical role in carbon markets. The shift from reduction/avoidance projects to removals brings new opportunities centered around the durability of sequestered carbon. C-Capsule is designed to work with insurance companies and markets, helping manage the risk of reversal and supporting confidence in CDR technologies. This will set a baseline for high-quality carbon credits.

How It Works
Governance
The C-Capsule Code (detailing the rules and regulations) is accredited by the International Tracking Standard Foundation (I-TRACK Foundation), a not-for-profit organization that administers the International Attribute Tracking Standard. Accreditation to the Standard ensures that the tracking of products (in C-Capsule’s case, CDR) is of the highest quality and satisfies the expectations of stakeholders, market entities, and end users. The Foundation acts as an independent body to oversee the integrity of the market and alignment of the C-Capsule Code with industry best practices.
Facilities are initially audited to establish the metrics of capture, with the objective of a simple, low-cost measurement.
Role of Market Intermediaries
Organizations can either engage directly with facility operators or use market intermediaries to manage their portfolio. Market intermediaries can hold Participant accounts on the C-Capsule Registry and are able to trade and redeem CRUs on behalf of their clients (beneficiaries).
At the end of the process, organizations receive a redemption statement uniquely identifying all claimed CRUs, including details of the originating CDR facilities, the process used, and the dates when the CDR occurred. This statement can be viewed directly on the C-Capsule Registry to support audit of claims.
Role of Governments
Governments can have multiple roles in the C-Capsule framework, such as Issuer (processing the issuance of certificates) or Redemption Authority (authorizing redemption of certificates). We recognize the sovereignty of governments and will always seek to adjust the framework to accommodate the requirements of a government.

Am I Eligible for C-Capsule?
Carbon removal project developers can qualify to produce CRUs if you can provide robust evidence to support your claims. The first step is to develop a methodology that complies with C-Capsule’s Methodology Guidelines. This document outlines the quality threshold for developers to register their facilities on the C-Capsule Registry.
C-Capsule has partnered with Absolute Climate to develop industry-leading carbon removal methodologies that create consistency, transparency, and integrity across the industry. In this partnership, Absolute Climate serves as the methodology service provider and C-Capsule delivers the registry services. The partnership decouples the methodology from the registry, ensuring credits are aligned with real climate outcomes. Project developers may choose to work with Absolute Climate to establish a new, high integrity carbon removal methodology.
All methodologies are subject to independent approval by the I-TRACK Foundation. Methodologies are assessed on their compliance with our stringent issuing criteria:
Measurable
CRUs represent CDR activity which can be precisely measured. Projects adhere to methodologies with identifiable measurement points, where the volume of CDR can be determined through robust and reliable metering equipment.
Durable
CRUs demonstrate the durable sequestration of GHG emissions that have been purposefully removed from the atmospheric cycle. Every methodology reflects a defined probability of durability set against a 100-year time horizon.
Verifiable
CRUs are independently verified at the point of issuance to clearly identify measurable carbon sequestration and ensure no double counting. Facilities are audited prior to issuance to verify that their characteristics adhere to the associated methodology.
Additional
CRUs represent CDR activity that would not have otherwise happened without carbon finance. Where significant non-carbon finance exists, additionality can represent factors that require investment, presence of barriers or risks, activities which aren’t common practice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about C-Capsule
What are CRUs (Carbon Removal Units)?
CRUs are origination certificates evidencing CDR events or activities. Similar in concept to renewable energy certificates (RECs) and Guarantees of Origin, CRUs are tradeable attribute certificates.
What is durable Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR)?
Carbon removal is the durable sequestration of carbon dioxide, directly removed from the atmosphere for at minimum a 100-year time horizon.
How can CRUs aid the acceleration of CDR deployment?
Many processes can sequester or make active use of carbon, removing it from the atmospheric cycle. However, most industrial scale processes for CDR are early-stage technologies or practices that have yet to realize scale efficiencies and financial viability. C-Capsule is a market-based solution designed to accelerate the deployment of these technologies.
What are the benefits of science-based carbon removal?
Historically, many carbon credits have been based on a conceptual “business as usual” case of avoided emissions, where the project seeks to quantify the emissions that would otherwise have happened. Carbon credit programs are often considered stronger when supported by science-based evidence of demonstrable actions taken, as is the case with CRUs.
How do CRUs work?
C-Capsule brings the measurable facts approach that is well established in renewable energy to the carbon market. Every net tonne of CO2 captured and durably sequestered is a tonne removed from the atmospheric cycle. This activity is recorded by a unique CRU (Carbon Removal Unit) for each tonne. CRUs can be sold to businesses or governments, which can then claim the associated CDR to neutralize their emissions within their climate accounting. Each CRU carries a unique serial number to guarantee no double counting or double claim. C-Capsule provides a market mechanism for generating revenue for CDR activities, and CRUs can be freely traded until a claim has been made (i.e., until a CRU has been retired).
Am I eligible for CRUs?
CDR developers are required to develop a methodology that adheres to C-Capsule’s Methodology Guidelines. The requirements outline the quality threshold for developers to register Facilities on the C-Capsule Registry.

Does C-Capsule serve the voluntary or compliance markets?
C-Capsule is designed to serve markets of all kinds, with a focus on providing robust evidence for buyers and reporting authorities. Although developed as a voluntary system, C-Capsule can be adopted by governments as a compliance tool and infrastructure to implement national policy.
How does C-Capsule work with government policies?
Government policies for addressing climate change generally involve carbon taxes or emission allowances. There are also funds effectively “buying” carbon mitigation activities. C-Capsule can work alongside a tax mechanism or similar program. Where carbon taxes are applied to emitters, it may be possible for CRUs to be used as a means of offsetting a tax obligation. CRUs could also be used as the evidence against which a purchasing obligation or CDR fund payments can be managed.
How does C-Capsule interact with country NDC reporting?
C-Capsule aims to complement global policies related to carbon markets, particularly those regarding Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
Are biological and ocean carbon sinks eligible?
Simple forestry and ocean-based biological sinks are not currently eligible for CRUs. It is intended that methodologies for these approaches will be developed in the future when approaches to measuring such activities and our understanding of their durability improve. Please contact us if you wish to support in this development.
How can I register a facility or project?
Project developers or their appointed agents need to become a Registrant to register CDR facilities. Any process which can provide independently verified evidence of durable CDR under an approved Methodology is eligible for C-Capsule. Facilities are initially audited to establish the metrics of CDR, with the objective of determining a simple, low-cost measurement. Direct carbon emissions from facilities (Scope 1) are audited and deducted to establish the net tonnes of carbon removed. Facilities can be registered to an existing methodology or a new methodology if none currently apply. For further information, please contact us.
How can I submit a methodology?
Methodologies approved by the I-TRACK Foundation are eligible for CRUs. Methodologies must be submitted to the Foundation through the Code Manager. Please contact us for further guidance and details on how to develop a methodology based on our template.
How can I be appointed as an independent auditor?
Auditors are referred to as Validation and Verification Bodies (VVBs). Each methodology sets out requirements for VVBs to be approved for the associated carbon removal process. All methodologies are subject to independent approval by the I-TRACK Foundation. A VVB can be appointed at any time. Please contact us for further information on the role of VVBs.
